Facilitation and plant phenotypic evolution

چکیده
While antagonistic interactions between plants have been a major topic of eco-evolutionary research, little evidence exists on the evolution positive plant (i.e., facilitation). Here, we first summarize existing empirical role facilitation as selection pressure plants. Then, develop theoretical framework based fitness-trait functions and interaction effectiveness that provides predictions for how facilitation-related traits may evolve. As act at levels beyond individual (such groups or species), discuss subject units evolutionary through facilitation. Finally, use proposed formal to identify areas future research knowledge gaps detected.

SPECIAL FEATURE – ESSAY REVIEW FACILITATION IN PLANT COMMUNITIES The evolution of facilitation and mutualism
1. While the relationship between facilitation and competition has been explored extensively in recent years, there is also a natural link between facilitation and mutualism, as both are interspecific interactions that confer benefits. Yet, the relationship between these two interactions has beenminimally explored. 2. Here, I explore parallels and differences between mutualism and facilitation....
متن کاملInduced Plant Defense: Evolution of Induction and Adaptive Phenotypic Plasticity
Induced defenses may evolve in natural plant populations where heritable variation in inducibility affects plant fitness. Although this has not been documented for any plant – parasite system, genetic variation in induction has been recently reported for several plant-parasite systems. Correlations between induction and fitness in variable parasite environments suggest that inducibility may ind...
متن کاملEpigenetic variation creates potential for evolution of plant phenotypic plasticity.
Heritable variation in plant phenotypes, and thus potential for evolutionary change, can in principle not only be caused by variation in DNA sequence, but also by underlying epigenetic variation. However, the potential scope of such phenotypic effects and their evolutionary significance are largely unexplored. Here, we conducted a glasshouse experiment in which we tested the response of a large...
متن کاملSelection constrains phenotypic evolution in a functionally important plant trait
A long-standing idea is that the macroevolutionary adaptive landscape – a ‘map’ of phenotype to fitness – constrains evolution because certain phenotypes are fit, while others are universally unfit. Such constraints should be evident in traits that, across many species, cluster around particular modal values, with few intermediates between modes. Here, I compile a new global database of 599 spe...
